As eXp Realty stands poised to expand into its 14th State in as many months, the buzz around the company has reached a fever pitch. eXp Realty has become known among forward-thinking real estate professionals for offering an unparalleled agent benefits package, including low fees, splits and caps, several comprehensive education programs, cutting edge technology, dynamic websites, phenomenal lead generation, and hands-on social media marketing coaching… Sure, eXp Realty has all of that, but the “secret ingredient” that makes eXp Realty really stand out is its industry-leading revenue share program.

Wouldn’t You Like to Retire Someday?

True, residual income programs that encourage company growth are nothing new. There are several other residual income programs out there, but none of them offer the kind of benefits offered by eXp Realty. None. Not even close. You know why? Because eXp Realty deliberately set out to beat the competition. And beat them, they have!

Let me explain. Of the few firms out there that offer residual income opportunities, most have programs that are flawed, convoluted and confusing or, at best, insignificant. For instance, a certain nationally known brokerage, with whom many of us at eXp formerly spent time, has what has been known as the industry-leading profit-share program. The rub lies right there in the name; profit share. eXp Realty has revenue share. Profit share derives from a complicated equation based on agent recruits, company growth and individual office profitability. It is an equation that is barely understood, even by those who sing its praises to potential recruits…and it doesn’t pay much, especially when the office you work in isn’t making money.

The eXp Realty revenue share program pays you residual income from your recruits regardless of office or company profitability. They make money – you make money.

The eXp Realty Revenue Share Program Explained

eXp Realty Revenue Share Calculator

It works like this: If you recruit an agent, you receive 3.5% of their gross commission. Period. Better yet, you keep receiving that amount on each of their transactions until they’ve paid their annual company cap of $16k. If you recruit at least 5 agents yourself, you then receive 4% from the commissions of any agents your recruits have recruited. If you recruit at least 10 agents, you not only receive the 4% from second-level recruits, but also another 2.5% from third level recruits! And it keeps going for seven levels! Basically, for every 5 personal recruits, you qualify for one deeper level of residual, passive income. Take a minute to play around with the eXp Realty Revenue Share Calculator on the left. (Note: you’ll receive a small share for lower level recruits regardless of your first level, though it is only a fraction of the amount in this model)

Here’s an example:

Let’s say you join eXp Realty right now, while we’re still in our ground-floor growth phase. You recruit 10 agents, each of which then recruits only one agent, and each of those agents recruits only one agent. That’s a total of only 30 agents, after yourself. (Note: As of September of 2010, there were over 1 Million members of the NAR, so 30 shouldn’t be that hard) Let’s say each of those agents sells 6 median priced homes at 3% commission (NAR estimates 2010 median home price of $166k)… Seems pretty conservative, even these days, doesn’t it? How much do you make?

$29, 880 in passive, residual income. You don’t even have to get out of bed to make it. (Actually, you must be current with your company fees, but still…)

Now, let’s say you get really excited (like me) and recruit 10 agents who are equally excited. Then they go and recruit 10 agents each who are really excited, and those each recruit 10 more. That’s 1,110 agents. Quite a few, I know. But remember, there are millions of them out there… Let’s say they all perform at the same conservative level as those in the previous example. How much do you think that is?

$876,978

That’s right…almost 1 million Dollars! In passive income. That all comes from convincing 10 halfway decent agents to come work for the fastest growing, most innovative real estate company in the Country, then helping them to do the same, and so on. That’s it. Now just imagine what would happen if you recruited a team of top producers in a market with average home prices in the $200-300k range…or higher!

Oh and, by the way, my job is to help you achieve your recruiting goals, as well as those of the agents you recruit… As an eXp Realty Recruiter and Social Media Marketing Coach I am 100% committed to working with you directly to make these numbers a reality. At least until my early retirement….

As a longtime ‘Hamster, the arrival of a bona-fide Irish pub to the downtown scene was more than a personal dream come true. It was a coming of age story for the town itself. It is my humble opinion that no town is really worth living in if it does not have at least a pretend Irish pub. The fact that Uisce is a real Irish pub, with genuine trappings and an actual (gasp, cover your ears, Glenn Beck!) immigrant owner, brings Bellingham a certain legitimacy…an air of maturity and style that it once lacked.

Uisce Irish Pub in Bellingham,WA

Uisce’s arrival was also a dream come true for its owners, Molee McGarry and David Rooney. To call it a “labor of love” would be a discredit to the Herculean effort and the sheer quantities of willpower, sweat, time and commitment expended in the creation of their masterpiece. And when I say masterpiece, it is no mere hyperbole. These two have an extensive background in the business, and even the smallest detail of Uisce’s warm and genuine atmosphere is the direct and deliberate result of the culmination of that experience. For them, Uisce is home, and all are welcome. It is, simply put, a place for people to meet people…to feel good and share their lives and stories with each other.

Molee and David, owners of Uisce Irish Pub

Immediately upon arrival, it is obvious that Uisce is different…unique. The vintage hardwood floors, the vaulted ceilings, and the refurbished church-pew benches draw you into another time and place, away from the pains of the economically catastrophic Bush-era hangover that continues to suck the life out of the outside world. No, this place is safe…it is something special. As the heavy old door slowly closes behind you, the air greets your senses with the smells and flavors of better times. You are at once surrounded by a perfect symmetry of class (the bartenders wear ties!) and comfort (pretzels!).

The bar itself (at 34 feet, the longest in Bellingham) was custom built from African mahogany by a Lummi Island cabinet maker. Behind the bar there are 12 beers on tap and 10 Irish Whiskeys, as well as 34 kinds of Scotch, the largest selection of its kind in Bellingham. Also behind the bar is one of Molee’s most prized possessions- a 1942 National cash register, “imported” from one of the oldest bars in San Francisco. It is among the last of its kind that still functions….and Molee is proud to call it her own.

Above the cash register is a rather curious and growing collection of $2 bills. Evidently, these bills are considered lucky in Irish bars, so when the bar first opened they tacked one up above the register. And then somebody added another….and another, and so on, so that the wall is now covered in bills, reaching up toward the ceiling. It seems to be working, though….business is booming!

On the weekends and certain special occasions, there is live music in the front of the pub. The rest of the time there is a jukebox. And what a jukebox it is! Molee hand-selected each and every album, so there is never a dull moment. Of course, my beloved Pogues are featured heavily…which always makes me smile. I’m still dreaming of the night when I can get the whole place to sing along to “Body of an American” at full volume… What a glorious moment that will be…and I can think of no better place for it.It’s been pretty tough out there for a lot of us lately. The nightlife in Bellingham has, in many ways, taken a serious beating over the past several years, leaving merely a shell of its former self. Thankfully, Molee and David have propped up the scene in a big way. Personally, I plan to thank them directly by posting up at the bar whenever I am in town. I would like to think the rest of you will do the same. If you should happen to see me, please say hello. After all, that’s what its all about.

I went to court today. Not for the first time…probably not the last. It was a matter of principal, and in matters of principal I am prepared to throw down whatever gauntlet is required to guard against offense, regardless of magnitude. Justice must be served, and our rights as citizens must be protected. As Thomas Jefferson once said, “The tree of liberty must be refreshed from time to time, with the blood of patriots and tyrants.”

Today the burden fell upon me to refresh that tree with my blood…or, at least, my twenty bucks.

Here’s what happened.

A couple of weeks back, I’d gone to my favorite bar, Uisce, in the mid-morning to interview the owners, Molly and David, for an article. I parked in front, paid the meter, and headed in for the interview. When I returned, an hour or so later, I saw the all-too-familiar yellow envelope decorating my windshield. Guh… Oh well…I guess I stayed too long. No matter, it was worth it. However, my mood quickly changed when I looked at the ticket. It said that I had parked over the line that divides the spaces, and the fine was $20. Twenty Dollars?!!!! What kind of a society are we living in when you can charge somebody $20 for coloring a little bit outside the lines?!!!

I’ve prepared a detailed diagram to set the scene:

As you can see, there were three spaces along the sidewalk. My car is represented in the diagram as “#2″. Cars #1 and #3 were already there when I arrived, so naturally, I performed one of my customarily precise parallel parking maneuvers. Upon returning, cars #1 and #3 had been replaced by others, with no evident effect having been caused by my “infraction”.

Here are the central points of my case, as prepared for the jury*

The rules regarding the parking code are unknown and unclear. In a made-up survey of 20 random Bellingham drivers, 19 had never heard of such a rule.

No harm, no foul. Given that all available spaces were used and paid for, there was simply no evidence that any harm had been done to either the City of Bellingham’s coffers or the lives other drivers, err… parkers. Common sense suggests that the delineation of individual parking spaces is arbitrary, assuming that each space may be occupied and paid for. Surely, it would have been different if my actions had resulted in the occupation of two spots, but that was clearly not the case.

The small, local businesses of downtown Bellingham rely on the ability of their customers to park their cars within a reasonable distance. Parking rules were created by the City to protect those spaces in the interest of local business. In my capacity as a journalist, it is surely plain to see that I was making wise and beneficial use of the available parking, both as a paying “customer” of the City, and as an advocate of the local business whose marketing was the purpose of my visit. Does it not seem contrary to the City’s agenda, vis-a-vis local business, to unjustly punish citizens who are attempting to advocate and participate in a thriving downtown economy?

What was my alternative? To NOT park in the nice, convenient spot because some idiot before me doesn’t know how to park? Are we all, then, to be continually at the mercy of our fellow drivers in matters of parking?

My car is a compact Japanese sedan. It doesn’t take up a lot of space. Why not go after some jack-ass in a Hummer?

*[Ed. Note: There was not really a jury, per se. Rather, there was just a judge and a court reporter seated ominously behind a raised bench. The whole setting looked like a scene from C-Span. There were two long tables, end to end, each with three microphones, opposite the bench with about 10 feet in between. Behind the tables were rows of pews with room for about 300 spectators]

Having delivered my arguments with poise and grace, I calmly sat back while the judge carefully rendered her verdict. The room was heavy with anticipation. The gallery, I sensed, was behind me. Well, figuratively behind me…obviously they were also literally behind me.

“I’ll grant you the maximum reduction”, she said.

Victory! The room erupted with applause, whooping and hollering from every corner. Confetti fell from the rafters while the band played Battle Hymn of the Republic… celebratory canon fire from the street shook the walls, even as the first reports of this tremendous triumph of the meek hit the major cable and internet news outlets. I was later to find out that CNN’s Reynolds Wolf cried a single tear…which struck me as particularly powerful, given the jokes I’d made at his expense in recent weeks…

The judge extended her hand to quiet the room. The cheering slowly subsided, the band faded out…

“That’ll be twelve dollars”, she said.

I was aghast, agog, taken aback! I reached quickly for my pocket thesaurus to search for additional synonyms. The room was suddenly silent… There I was…a solitary soul, standing tall before the Goliath of the American Judicial System. I extended my chest and spoke with great inner confidence, like Joseph Welch challenging Senator McCarthy, ” Have you no sense of decency, sir? At long last, have you left no sense of decency?” This only confused the judge, however. Being a woman, she was evidently unaccustomed to being addressed as “sir”. Still, the mob was with me, and the air was electric with nervous excitement. Proud, they were, to see one of their own, a lowly citizen, daring to challenge the system and speak up in defense of the Working Man.

But then, out loud, I said, ” Meh…really? Ok. Thanks, I guess.“

By that point, my concern had shifted, from the $20 fine I already had, to the potential $99 fine that might be waiting for me in the parking lot. See, I’d learned from two hapless souls who’d gone up before me, that it is also against the rules to drive without a license plate on the front of your car. I’d been driving my car for 5 years without a front plate, but I was suddenly positive that Irony was out to get me, and that I would end up paying far more than the 20 bucks I’d come down here to fight about. So I decided that saving $8 was still, technically, a win….so I took it. By the way, $99 was the reduced(!) fine for not having a front plate.

I decided it would be wise to do some investigating of the rules, so as to avoid further frustrating reduction of my finances, and because I am fond of alliteration. Unfortunately, the City of Bellingham Municipal Code appears to have been written by Miss Teen South Carolina. (Watch the video, if you don’t get the reference) I’m not kidding… I’ll leave you with a little taste. Thanks for reading!

11.36.030 – PARKING METERS – DEPOSIT OF COINS AND TIME LIMITS (WAC 308-330-610)

A.	No person shall park a vehicle in any parking meter space alongside of and next to which a parking meter has been installed during the restricted and regulated time applicable to the parking meter zone in which such meter is located unless a United States coin or coins of the approximate denomination as indicated on the parking meter or a city-issued token shall have been deposited therein for unexpired intervals of time, and said meter has been placed in operation.

B.	No person shall permit a vehicle within his control to be parked in any parking meter space during the restricted and regulated time applicable to the parking meter zone in which such meter is located while the parking meter for such space indicates by signal that the lawful parking time in such space has expired. This provision shall not apply to the act of parking or the necessary time which is required to deposit immediately thereafter a coin or coins in such meter.

C.	No person shall park a vehicle in any parking meter space for a consecutive period of time longer than the maximum lawful parking time designated on the meter, irrespective of the number or amounts of the coins deposited in such meter.

Bellingham Bay and the nearby San Juan Islands are well known to be among the best places in the World for kayaking and small-boat sailing. It is no surprise then that Bellingham, with its miles of urban waterfront, offers superior access for intrepid sailors, rowers and “yakkers”, as I’ve just decided to call them. Tucked away between the Alaska ferry terminal and a small tidal lagoon, on the water-side of the train tracks you’ll find one of Bellingham’s hidden treasures, the Bellingham Bay Community Boating Center*. Little-known outside of a relatively tight-knit group of local small-boat enthusiasts, the Community Boating Center is THE place to learn about and rent kayaks, rowing shells and sailing dinghies.

*The official name is just “Community Boating Center”…

Beginning as a small shop in the mid-70′s, the Boating Center became a non-profit organization in 2007, and is now headed by executive director Mike Callaizakis. Their primary mission is to promote education and safety, featuring programs in cold water safety, environmental awareness, and beginner-to-intermediate courses in kayaking, rowing and sailing. According to Callaizakis, “it’s all about getting people on the water and creating access…” Proceeds are allocated to at-risk youth programs and community projects, such as the planned construction of a new dock nearby.

Among the center’s many classes, the most popular are the kayak series, sailing series and the sculling camp. Click here for a full list of their 2010 classes.

In addition to educational programs, the center offers guided tours, rentals and storage. There are some very affordable rental packages, including an unbelievable $125 season pass for unlimited kayak rentals, $250 for the whole family! They’re open from 9am-8pm (last boat at 7pm) Wednesday-Sunday, May 1st -October 31st

Do you like to wear a dress over your corduroy pants? Do you have greasy, matted up hair that qualifies as its own ecosystem? Do you think that voting during a Presidential campaign is a waste of time because the American system of government is set up in such a way as to present a false-choice between two nearly-identical evils? If so, then you probably already know about “The Hub,” and this article is not directed at you.

If, on the other hand, you’re a starving college student, a regular citizen who has fallen on hard times and needs a helping hand, or just some guy who drives a broken down heap with no brakes and really wants to cut down on car expenses, then this article IS directed at you!

So then, what is The Hub? I’m glad you asked…

Founded about 8 years ago by Bellingham resident Kyle Morris, the Hub is a “… non-profit, community based, bicycle shop dedicated to inspiring love for bicycles for anyone who has love to give. …majority of bikes sold here are bikes once forgotten but given new life through the generous donations of the members of the community and the hard work, tender love, and care of the staff. A large section of the shop is dedicated to open shop space to anyone who wishes to service their own bike. Donations are accepted by the hour. Tools are provided. Donations of the monetary variety and the bicycle variety are greatly appreciated.”

With about 200+ refurbished bikes for sale, as well as numerous piles and cabinets full of spare parts, the Hub personifies the spirit of community that Bellingham is so well known for. Bikes are donated from all over the area, and large amounts of the proceeds go directly to programs for the homeless and others in need. Sure, there are some other really great local bike shops, but those cater to folks who can afford several hundred or a few thousand dollars on a brand-new ride. The Hub offers perfectly decent bikes in the $250-450 range, and their emphasis on education and teamwork keeps repair and maintenance costs to a minimum.

With just a handful of employees and several volunteers, the Hub offers classes on bicycle maintenance and, for only $5/hour, offers a community repair space filled with every type of tool and how-to manual.

In honor of this month’s 7th Annual Bike to Work and School Day, the Hub is celebrating with a community pancake feed from 7-10am on Friday, May 21st, followed by a BBQ with live music, scavenger hunt, and a raffle on Saturday the 22nd, beginning at 11am. It is their biggest event of the year, and an excellent opportunity to get to know what they’re all about!

The Hub is located at 903 1/2 N. State Street in Bellingham. It sits off the street, between State and the South Bay Trail… 360.255.2072

Pop quiz: Raise your hand if you actually know what Cinco de Mayo* is all about. Come on, let’s see ‘em! …That’s what I thought.

*That’s “5th of May”, for those of you who don’t speak Spanish

The Mexican holiday of Cinco de Mayo is about more than just margaritas and buckets of Corona…not that you’d know it by watching the hoards of drunken real estate agents revelers running all over downtown Bellingham this afternoon. Aside from the drink specials, Mariachi bands and culturally dubious over-sized sombreros, there is a real cause for celebration on this special day. I won’t pretend to be a scholar of Mexican history, so I will happily borrow from Wickipedia…

“Cinco de Mayo is a holiday held on May 5 that commemorates the Mexican army’s unlikely victory over French forces at the Battle of Puebla on May 5, 1862, under the leadership of General Ignacio Zaragoza Seguín. It is celebrated primarily in the state of Puebla and in the United States. While Cinco de Mayo sees limited significance and celebration nationwide in Mexico, the date is observed nationwide in the United States and other locations around the world as a celebration of Mexican heritage and pride. Cinco de Mayo is not Mexico’s Independence Day, the most important national patriotic holiday in Mexico.”

Here in Bellingham, as in most of the U.S., Cinco de Mayo has taken on a cultural significance more along the lines of other national “holidays” like Oktoberfest, St. Patrick’s Day, and the Chinese New Year, celebrating the Mexican people and customs as much as the historical events of the day, itself. Cinco de Mayo is a day for all of us to take a minute and reflect upon the fact that our country owes much of its character and custom to people who didn’t sail across the seas from Europe…at least not the White ones… This would be an awfully boring place to live if we didn’t have the cultural and ethnic diversity brought to us by people hailing from outside our borders. As much as I love my Guinness, Spaten, and Smithwick’s, I don’t think I’d want to live in a world without Corona and Patron Silver margarita’s…

On that note, there are some special events happening tonight around Bellingham where you can go raise your glasses AND your cultural awareness!

Boundary Bay Brewery: Boundary Bay’s Chili Beer, Tacos, Churros and live music by Trio Lucero Del Norte

Fireside Martini and Wine Bar: Drink and food specials, tequila seminars

Ok…this is disappointing. Nobody else has anything else posted online for events. Come on Bellingham, get with the times, already! …or at least call me and let me know what’s happening! That being said, there are the obvious choices, like:

Cinco de Mayo: Obviously they will be serving lots and lots of margaritas, beers, etc.

Casa Que Pasa: …ditto…

I must admit…I feel a little defeated by not having found more events…please don’t hate me. I’ll do better next time…I promise. There is only one thing to do in this situation…Margaritas!

If you were to ask a certified coffee aficionado (like me) about where to find the very best coffee in the known Universe, you would very likely hear “Tony’s!!!!” blurted back at you before you’d even finished the question. There is simply no comparison to be made between Tony’s and any other coffee. It’s sort of like saying there is Earth…and then there are all the other planets. Now you know…

Located in Bellingham’s historic Fairhaven district, Tony’s Coffee has been, quite literally, a cornerstone of the Bellingham cultural scene since 1971. I say “literally” because Tony’s occupies a corner of Fairhaven’s Terminal Building, built in 1888. While I realize that a semantic argument can be made against the use of the word literally, I will thank all of you grammar-snobs for allowing me a little wiggle room here…

Based in Bellingham, Tony’s has been a leader in green, organic technologies and specialization in good old-fashioned craftsmanship. Though their products are available in numerous restaurants, cafe’s and retail outlets throughout the West Coast, Tony’s has chosen to remain a boutique operation, emphasizing quality over quantity, and it shows. (order online here)

Their location in Fairhaven is always warm and inviting, offering a perfect place to start the day or spend an afternoon with great friends or great books. I love to sit at the rail up against the front windows and watch the people walk past the bustling intersection outside. Tony’s always seems to have a certain buzz about it… You can just feel it when you walk in, almost as if the pulse of the community- it’s whole energy and being- can be felt radiating directly from within its old walls… If you want to really get to know the essential character of Bellingham, spend a late morning or afternoon sipping from one of Tony’s myriad delicious brews and you’ll know what I mean.

…and make sure you try one of the chocolate chip cookies.

This post is part of the Facebook series “365 Things to do in Bellingham“, produced by myself and Michael Eisenberg.

Chances are, you’ve never had Russian dumplings before. I’ve seen them in only one other place, which is now closed. Pel’Meni’s dumplings are basically peirogis, stuffed with either potato or beef. Ordering lunch doesn’t get much simpler. Served in to-go boxes with a slice of bread and side of sour cream, these make a great on-the-go lunch, or an even better late night snack. Fortunately, they’re open until after 2am, making for a fantastic pit-stop on the way home from a long night at the, uh…library. If you like spice, be sure to add some of their signature hot sauce to your sour cream. Be warned, though… it’s very, very spicy. It usually ends up making my eyes sweat…

Like many of my favorite businesses, Pel’ Meni is pure Bellingham…housed in an historic lofted building filled with local art. They’ve got a record player with a pretty decent collection of LPs, from which patrons are free to choose, giving the atmosphere a fluctuating vibe that moves with the moods of visitors, day and night. Some days it will be Lionel Richie, some days Dolly Parton… You never know.

There are rumors of a second location opening somewhere in Seattle, but for now their State Street location is the only one. They don’t deliver, but they do encourage phoned-in orders, so give them a quick call before you head over. 360.715.8324 Don’t worry, you don’t need a menu…there are only two choices: potato or beef. Pretty simple…even at 2am.

Bellingham, Washington has always been a town that knows its music. For decades, music friends and fiends have lingered among the bricks and alleys of downtown Bellingham’s many record stores, guitar shops and live music venues… Inevitably, time has taken its toll on the scene and the landscape has changed over the years. Many of the great bars, record shops and local bands have moved on into the ether of legend and lore, though a few vestigial remnants have endured.

“All Killer, No Filler”

On any given day you can still wander downtown to the corner of Railroad and Magnolia and step into a veritable time machine of indie-rock heaven in the form of Avalon Music, Bellingham’s last local independent record store. A 27-year veteran of Bellingham’s thriving and by-all-means-still-kicking music scene, Avalon will take you back to a time before iTunes, MP3 players and American Idol. A wondrous and magical time when the incense burned in every room, tapestries hung from the rafters and music was made with actual instruments and performed by the people whose faces appeared on the album cover… (Ed. note: an “album” was a collection of music, usually in the form of a “record” or “compact disc”, whose exterior contained works of “art” in the form of pictures and graphics) Their unofficial motto pretty well sums it up:

“Avalon is so far ahead of it’s time, it is standing behind you”

Stocked with over 2000 records, 3000 CDs and 400 posters and tapestries, Avalon is THE place to cultivate a serious appreciation for music in Bellingham. Avalon has just 5 employees, all of whom are local, performing musicians. According to staffer Spencer Willhoft, Avalon offers a “place to meet with like-minded people and nurture your taste in music, as opposed to surfing the internet alone in your living room. We are more in tune with your tastes than iTunes Genius.” He also offers tips on how to grow a seriously dapper mustache…just one of the many personalized touches you can get from a real record store… They specialize in rare and hard-to-find items, and will even do special orders for anything still in print at no additional charge. You’d be surprised at the amount of extraordinary music that exists outside the virtual walls of the iTunes kingdom.

This Saturday, April 17th, marks the annual national “Record Store Day.” Across the country, indie record stores will be offering special releases from a plethora of artists, many of which are only available in particular stores on that particular day. Avalon is celebrating the event by presenting some of these special releases, as well as offering sale prices on all of their music and hosting live music in front of the store from noon to 5pm. The live music will be a tasty cross-section of musical styles, from Delta blues to heavy metal and classic rock.

Seriously folks, haven’t we had enough of plastic, talentless and vapid American Idols?! Real music is about art and passion and anger and vitality, and it is meant to be shared and experienced with other people, REAL people! So close your laptop, get off your couch and go support a local business and listen to something that makes you remember what it means to be alive!
