Lake Samish
Squires lake hike…near Lake Samish neighborhood.

As the sun came out for the second day in a row yesterday, I was drawn towards a locals favorite hike up to Squires Lake Park on the west side of Lookout Mountain.
The Park’s entrance is just off exit 242 and go east approximately 1 mile on Highway 99 and you’ll find the small parking area on the east. The initial hike
to the lake is 1/3 of a mile up the well maintained switchback trail through a fern covered forest.
The 84 acre park was purchased in 1995 with Whatcom Land Trust and was opened in 1997. Like most of Washington state parks, dogs are allowed as long as they are leashed and cleaned up after.
The 5 acre lake is abundant with wildlife from wood ducks splashing about, to beaver working on trees along the shores.

The trail follows the waters edge all the way around and has half a dozen park benches strategically placed along the route with placards to describe things of interest.
As you follow the path along you’ll find the Beaver Pond trailhead that leads further up the mountain to a
smaller body of water created by the furry rodents. Did you know that the #1 killer of beaverkind is getting hit by falling trees? True story.
Here’s my son helping out with the tree cutting. He’s ever the poser!
This is just one of the many reasons to make Bellingham your home. If you are thinking of Real Estate…please give me a call and I’ll give you a personal tour of my favorite places.
