Barkley Neighborhood
The suburban Mount Baker neighborhood is one of the fastest growing areas of Bellingham. The once semi-rural neighborhood has experienced growth in all areas; commercial, industrial and residential. Most of the commercial growth in the neighborhood has occurred around the two neighborhood shopping centers, Sunset Square and Barkley Village. Together, these shopping areas meet most daily needs of area residents with two supermarkets, a variety of retail stores, and many restaurants. Industrial growth in the neighborhood is primarily along Hannegan Road, where 640 acres of industrially zoned land was annexed to the city in 1998. This area north of Sunset Drive continues to expand in commercial/industrial use.
Barkley Homes
Residential growth has taken place throughout the neighborhood and includes apartments, multi-family housing, and single-family homes.
On Barkley Hill, several subdivisions of newer, single-family homes cover the western hillside. These homes are built near the top of the hill and enjoy stunning views of Bellingham Bay, the San Juan Islands and the Canadian Cascades. These are all fairly large homes that were built from the 1990s to the present. |
