North Shore Trail Run - Planned on 6.2 miles - Ended up just over 3

Glenn SanfordAs part of my New Years planning I've been getting my running back on track.  I've always taken my running pretty seriously and in fact last year did the Surf City Marathon in Huntington Beach California in February.  Unfortunately for the following 10 months I was dealing with some chronic IT band challenges which essentially put me on the sidelines.  After taking November and December off for the most part I started getting my running legs back under me.  This last week I have run at the track at Civic Field.  I've also run from Fairhaven Park out to Arroyo Park and back and today was supposed to be my long run via the North Shore Trail on the North East side of Lake Whatcom.

Normally I wouldn't carry a camera with me on a run, however I decided that I would take some photos while I was on my run.  I was pretty jazzed on the plan until a little after mile one I came up on a bit of a obstacle.  There were some material (downed trees and dirt) as well signs and yellow tape blocking the continuation of the path.  Reading the sign suggested that the trail may be worse ahead and not to go any further.  We'll I've always had a part of me that questions authority so ultimately I continued on.

Well it wasn't even 1/2 mile, actually right past mile marker 1.5 that the real obstacle showed up.

It seems that the entire hillside had collapsed down and into Lake Whatcom.  I looked for a way to go over or around and there wasn't one.  Ultimate I turned around and headed back toward the trailhead.  Here are a few of the photos that I took on the way back.

So much for going to the end and taking photos at the 3.1 mile marker.  Well I guess I have to do that on another day.

The North Shore Trail in Bellingham is (when it is cleaned up) a quiet trail without the traffic that many of the trails closer in to Bellingham have.  For that reason it's one of my favorite runs at the six mile distance, not to mention its almost entirely flat, which when one is getting back into shape is better then trying to climb some of the steep hills at other trails. I do recommend the North Shore trail especially when the weather is a bit warmer and the trail is in better shape.

Check back on the neighborhood blogs regularly.  There are tons of trails in and around Bellingham to enjoy.  For a city of its size I believe it has more trails then most.  A few years ago we were named Trail City USA.
