Highland Heights Park Renovation to begin in March

Highland Heights Park on Vining Street is getting an upgrade with new playground equipment and other improvements, according to Bellingham’s Parks and Recreation Department.

The playground which was built in the early 1970’s, doesn’t comply with current safety and accessibility standards. The new equipment to be installed includes a swing, slides, climbers, a spring toy and a spinning toy as well as restriping the basketball court and adding a new picnic table, park benches, and a wheelchair-accessible path to Illinois Lane.

The Alabama Hill Neighborhood Association began the effort for renovating the park in 2007.

The neighborhood feels lucky the project is happening and didn’t get the ax due to budget restraints.

Alabama Hill Market Report

It’s a beautiful day here in the Alabama Hill neighborhood. It’s pretty quiet, there’s not much going on here as there is in Fairhaven because Alabama Hill is just a residential neighborhood. There is a neighborhood meeting next Tuesday night May 5th. The views from the Hill are really nice.

As far as the real estate market in the neighborhood goes, there are 10 homes for sale, and 5 under contract. 11 homes sold in the past six months.

If you’re looking for a home in the neighborhood an entry-level home is priced at $249,500 for a 3 bedroom, 1 bath, 1406 square foot home. For those wanting a fabulously view from the Hill with a little more room there is a 4 bedroom, 4 bath, 3085 square foot home on the market for $595,950.

One of the smallest and least expensive homes that sold within the past 6 months was $124,500 and the highest priced home to sell in the neighborhood in the past six months was $435,000. Average price of sold homes was $285,045 and median price was $261,000.

Alabama Hill Neighborhood

The Alabama Hill neighborhood is named for the major arterial street that bisects the neighborhood, Alabama Street. It is perched on the Hill where many of the homes in this neighborhood take full advantage of the beautiful views of the city, Bellingham Bay and the islands beyond, with fantastic sunsets like the picture to the left available to many of the neighborhood residents. Most of the homes were built during the 60s and 70s.

Whatcom Falls Park is at the south end of the neighborhood, there are a few small neighborhood parks like St. Clair and Highland Heights Park and one of Bellingham’s hidden treasures Big Rock Garden Park with its beautiful array of outdoor sculptures. The neighborhood also borders below Bloedel-Donovan Park and access to Lake Whatcom. The popular Railroad Trail winds through the neighborhood as well.

Students in this neighborhood attended Roosevelt elementary, Whatcom Middle School and Bellingham High School.
