Silver Beach Neighborhood
Silver Beach is a residential neighborhood that surrounds the northern end of Lake Whatcom. Lake Whatcom is the biggest of three lakes in the Bellingham area and it provides beautiful views and recreational opportunities for area residents. Lake Whatcom is also the source of the city's drinking water.
The Silver Beach Neighborhood has a wide variety of ages and styles of housing ranging from the upscale, lakefront homes along Northshore Drive to rental properties and single-family homes off the lake. The majority of the housing is in good shape and there are many well-landscaped lots in the neighborhood. Most of the newer homes are located along Barkley Blvd in the northern end of the neighborhood and on the eastern side of Lake Whatcom off of Northshore Dr.
There is one small commercial area located in the Silver Beach Neighborhood. This retail area includes a small neighborhood grocery store/mini mart.
Barkley Village shopping center is located within a short drive for many Silver Beach residents.
Fred Meyer Shopping Center and Lakeway Center both have grocery stores and are about 3 miles away.
Silver Beach Elementary School is located in the neighborhood within walking distance of many homes.
In general, public school students who live to the north of Alabama Street attend Silver Beach Elementary, Whatcom Middle School and Squalicum High School. Students living in the Silver Beach Neighborhood in the area south of Alabama Street attend Geneva Elementary, Kulshan Middle School and Bellingham High School.
Bloedel Donovan Park, located in the Silver Beach Neighborhood, is the only public park on Lake Whatcom. The park's public boat ramp, beach and swimming area make it a popular place for area residents to come during the summer months. The park is also a favorite place for many dog owners because dogs are allowed off-leash until 10 a.m. during the peak season and all day during the rest of the year (updated 1/18/07). Bloedel Donovan Park also has a playground, picnic facilities, basketball court, sand volleyball and a large Community Building that is utilized for many different events throughout the year.
Big Rock Garden Park is a relatively new city park located in the neighborhood. Big Rock Park features a wide variety of outdoor sculptures and hosts special events in the summer.
