South Hill Neighborhood
South Hill is a residential neighborhood located between WWU and Bellingham Bay. It is one of the most desirable neighborhoods in Bellingham because of its location, well kept homes, and excellent, sweeping views of the bay, San Juan Islands, and Canadian coastal range. Many consider it a "first class" residential neighborhood.
Many of the homes below 17th Street were built in the early 1900's. There is a wide variety in the size and architecture of the homes in this section of the neighborhood. Many of these historic homes were built by the more prominent citizens of the early 1900's and have been well kept and restored. Wardner's "Castle" (upper left) is one of these historic homes built by Jim Wardner in 1890.
Most homes in the South Hill Neighborhood have small, well-landscaped yards. Because of the steep slopes and the age of development, much of the neighborhood is organized along alleys rather than principle streets. The alleys are used for deliveries, childrens play areas and for visiting neighbors.
In the lower section of South Hill there are many condominiums that line both State Street and Boulevard and feature excellent views of Bellingham Bay. These condominiums are located along the flat, main arterial through the neighborhood connecting historic Fairhaven with downtown Bellingham. Many have easy access to Taylor Dock (above) and Boulevard Park along Bellingham's waterfront.
Residents don't have to go too far to meet their shopping needs. Located just to the south of the South Hill Neighborhood is the historical Fairhaven Shopping District. This district includes the Haggen Fairhaven Market, Fairhaven Pharmaacy and many restaurants, cafes, and shops.
Sehome Village is located a short distance to the east and Downtown Bellingham is a short distance to the north.
Boulevard Park (below) is a beautiful waterfront park located on Bellingham Bay in the South Hill Neighborhood. This park is popular for its views of the bay, evening sunsets, and summer music concerts. Many Bellingham area residents fill the park on the 4th of July to watch the fireworks. Boulevard Park also features walking paths, grassy areas, a small children's play area, two small beach areas and fishing.
Lowell Elementary School (above) is located here and is a short walk away for many neighborhood students.
In general, students living in the South Hill Neighborhood attend Lowell Elementary School, Fairhaven Middle School and Sehome High School.
