Lummi Island Ferry
This foot ferry to Lummi Island leaves Gooseberry Point, which is located 15 minutes northwest of Bellingham, and is about an eight-minute trip. The ferry travels 38 times a day on weekdays and 18 times a day on weekends. Outstanding views of the San Juans and Orcas Island can be enjoyed on the trip.
The first inhabitants of Lummi Island were the Lummi Indians. Most of them left before the white settlers moved in, to avoid raids from northern tribes in the late 1870's. The island was named after the Lummi Nation. Though the island is easily confused as being part of the Lummi Reservation, it is actually a part of the San Juan Islands. Approximately 800 people reside there year-round, many of them artisans. Artist's Tours are available every Memorial Day weekend, Labor Day weekend, and the first weekend in December.
