Historically, the York Neighborhood could be called Bellingham's first middle-class suburban neighborhood. The majority of homes in the neighborhood were built between 1890 and 1910, but there are a few homes that were built as recently as 1970. The York Neighborhood has areas of local historical interest, although there are no sites currently listed on the National Register. The York Neighborhood is centrally located in Bellingham making it attractive to many families because of its proximity to downtown.
Small homes built on small lots make up the majority on housing in the York Neighborhood giving it a high population density. The affordability of the smaller properties and its location make it an attractive place to live for many people. There is only one open space in the neighborhood, but the narrow, tree-lined streets and sidewalks are busy with family life.
There are businesses and apartments that line the western portion of the neighborhood next to the downtown area. Businesses also line Lakeway Drive in the southern section.
Lincoln Square, a 198 unit residential high-rise for senior citizens and Shuksan Healthcare Center are located in the York neighborhood.
Nelson's Market (left) is a classic mom-and-pop neighborhood grocer on the corner of Potter and Humbolt streets.
Fred Meyer Shopping Center and Lakeway Center are located nearby and include two supermarkets and several shops and restaurants for area residents.
Franklin Park is a small park with a playground and a large grassy field located in the southern part of the neighborhood.
Rock Hill Park is a small open space north of Lakeway that has a basketball court, playfield and playground.
In general, students living in the York Neighborhood fall within the Lowell Elementary School, Fairhaven Middle School, and Sehome High School attendance areas.
